Nessas técnicas, não só, os materiais inertes como madeira, pedras, geotexteis e estruturas de metal e concreto, mas também a vegetação é entendida como componente construtivo; em obras que visam a perenização de cursos de água, estabilização de encostas e taludes, tratamento de voçorocas e, o controle da erosão do solo de modo geral.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class="MsoNormal" align="center"&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span lang="PT-BR"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;&lt;span style="FONT-STYLE: normal;font-family:Georgia;" class="Apple-style-span" &gt;&lt;span lang="PT-BR"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;Surgidas inicialmente, no âmbito fluvial, como medidas complementares aos métodos tradicionais de controle de torrentes, estas técnicas são conhecidas e utilizadas na Europa Central há décadas. Nos métodos tradicionais de engenharia, outrora lá empregados, as componentes ecológicas e estéticas foram em parte negligenciadas. Atualmente, estas técnicas apresentam-se na Europa como alternativa aos modelos tradicionais, pois além de trazerem solução aos problemas, quando corretamente empregadas, trazem vantagens estéticas e ecológicas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class="MsoNormal" align="center"&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span lang="PT-BR"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;&lt;span style="FONT-STYLE: normal;font-family:Georgia;" class="Apple-style-span" &gt;&lt;span lang="PT-BR"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;Também aqui se apresentam como alternativa adequada na solução de uma série de problemas normalmente decorrentes do comportamento processual natural dos cursos de água, por vezes, agravados ou mesmo resultantes das ações antrópicas de ocupação. Bem como, se apresentam como alternativa na [re]estabilização de encostas ou prevenção de movimentos de massas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class="MsoNormal" align="center"&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span lang="PT-BR"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;&lt;span style="FONT-STYLE: normal;font-family:Georgia;" class="Apple-style-span" &gt;&lt;span lang="PT-BR"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;Esses problemas que representam, tanto perdas econômicas como situações de risco, podem, com o devido conhecimento, serem mitigados ou mesmo em parte solucionados pela Engenharia Natural. Entretanto não só esses modelos de intervenção são, no sul do Brasil, pouco conhecidos, como carecesse de informações sobre as características técnicas da vegetação.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;span lang="PT-BR"&gt;&lt;div style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;Com intento de suprir parte dessa carência de informações, a Universidade Federal de Santa Maria em conjunto com o Instituto de Engenharia Natural da Universidade Rural de Viena deu início a um projeto que visa investigar as propriedades vegetativo-mecânicas da vegetação ribeirinha e de encosta. Já foi possível avaliar a aplicabilidade técnica de algumas espécies vegetais, com investigações que compreenderam desde a avaliação do potencial de reprodução vegetativa, época ideal de plantio, crescimento e arquitetura do sistema radicular, bem como a flexibilidade dos ramos e a resistência ao arranquio e tração das raízes. Esse conhecimento tornou possível a implantação segura de algumas obras piloto de estabilização de taludes fluviais. Nesse domínio já existem inclusive empresas que atuam no mercado nacional prestando serviços, que em diferentes graus de aplicação e entendimento, valem-se das técnicas de Engenharia Natural. No entanto, a lacuna de conhecimento quanto às características biotécnicas da vegetação, faz com que as empresas valorizem essencialmente intervenções apoiadas no uso de geotexteis, biomantas ou mesmo geossintéticos, concreto e gabiões, entre outras estruturas pré-fabricadas, em que a vegetação por vezes torna-se simples acabamento estético. Neste capítulo foi incluída também a descrição botânica de espécies, tidas na literatura como potencialmente aptas para a bioengenharia e sugerida uma forma prática de experimento para estudar diversas características biotécnicas de vegetação reófila.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;Os capítulos seguintes 6 e 7, adentram as formas e técnicas disponíveis para o manejo prático dos cursos de água, dando especial atenção às obras de bioengenharia.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="justify"&gt;O ultimo é quase um guia para reconhecer e classificar os problemas decorrentes de processos fluviais, levantar informações, decidir sobre as formas de ação, implantar e acompanhar o tratamentos selecionados. Esses eventos podem resultar em danos econômicos e sociais, que o homem, involuntariamente pode agravar, ou controlar se houver interesse. Como forma de estabilizar declives e controlar processos erosivos, pode-se fazer uso das técnicas de bioengenharia. Estas biotécnicas são conhecidas e utilizadas há décadas na Europa (em países como Alemanha, Suíça e Áustria) e na América do Norte. No Brasil, entretanto, são ainda pouco conhecidas, dada a falta de uma visão sistemática, decorrente de estudos, observações e experimentos, que permitam sua utilização e difusão. Este trabalho revisa os conceitos relacionados ao tema, apresenta informações sobre as características e os processos fluviais particulares de um curso de água tomado como referência – o arroio Guarda-mor –, e experimenta formas de estabilização dos seus taludes, dando especial atenção à performance e às qualidades biotécnicas de algumas espécies vegetais de ocorrência local. Obteve-se sucesso com os dois modelos de intervenção experimentados. Estes puderam ser implementados com materiais vegetais e construtivos locais e a um custo justificável.
